Turning woods into pasture

I fenced off a 6-acre pasture last year to separate calves from cows and now I'm clearing out a thick patch of woods and brush in the middle to improve grazing. Once it's cleared, should I plant grass or will it fill in on its own if I keep mowing?

Basically, if the soil gets sun, it'll start filling in on its own, especially with native stuff. But if you want good grazing, add either fescue or rye. Mowing helps, but seeding speeds things up for sure. GL. :)

That's what I was wondering, I'll probably seed a mix just to give it a head start, did you have better luck with fescue or rye?
