Understanding 540 vs. 540E

I'm a bit of a rookie here, so bear with me. My wife's new John Deere 5100M has both a 540 and a 540E PTO and I've never had a tractor with the "E" feature before. Since she's mostly doing light work like shredding pastures and roads, it seems like the 540E is the right choice, but I wanted to be sure.

My understanding is that the 540E option lets you run the PTO at the same speed as the regular 540, but at a lower engine RPM, which should save fuel. But is there a downside to using it for this kind of work? Should I just stick with the regular 540 to be safe, or is the 540E the way to go for light-duty jobs?
 
From experience, the 540E PTO works wonders for simple stuff like keeping pastures and roads neat. It lets the tractor engine run slower, which saves on gas without losing power. If your wife is doing light work, the 540E is a solid, fuel-saving pick that will get the job done.

Awesome! This information is very helpful. Does this mean that if she hits on heavier patches, she needs to switch back to regular 540?
